Get Up, Show Up, Stand Up.
In his lifetime, Hemmingway published seven novels, six short story collections, two non-fiction works and a vast number of newspaper articles. Several of his novels are considered classics of twentieth century English literature, so it’s worth finding out how he went about it. Hemmingway had a study – a custom built square tower – but he did most of his writing in his bedroom, half of which was occupied by a desk, but he didn’t use it very much. His typewriter actually sat on top of a bookcase and here he would stand to type. But for his best work he preferred to write with a pencil, standing for hours at a time, moving only to shift his weight from one leg to the other in that search for the ‘one true sentence’ that would get him going. On a good day he'd wear down seven pencils.
